Recipe Description

Very good if made right

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sauerkraut, undrained
  • ½ cup shortening|vegetable shortening
  • 1¾ cups flour
  • caraway seeds (optional)

Directions

  1. Put sauerkraut and its liquid in a large mixing bowl.
  2. Add the shortening and blend well.
  3. Add the flour, mixing carefully with your fingers.
  4. Gather into a ball.
  5. Lightly flour a pastry board and roll out the dough until it is ?-inch thick.
  6. Cut into 2- x 4-inch strips with a sharp knife.
  7. Add caraway seeds if desired.
  8. Place the strips on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake in preheated oven until lightly brown.
  9. If the zelnicky get too brown they become bitter.
  10. Remove immediately to a rack and cool.
  11. Serve as snack with beer and cheese or with soup.
