Alton Brown’s Slow-Cooker Oatmeal

Alton Brown makes oatmeal in a slow-cooker.

Get your day started right with Alton’s amazingly-easy slow-cooker oatmeal!

In this installment of Good Eats we cover the good ol’ breakfast staple—oatmeal. Trust us, this is way better than the instant packet stuff!

You’ve heard the advice before—eat a good breakfast to set you up for success throughout the day. But when you’re rushing to get yourself ready, are you really thinking about making a hearty breakfast?

Alton Brown has a solution for you with his overnight oatmeal. That’s right, you make this breakfast the night before!

This recipe is about as simple as it gets. With the aid of a slow cooker, you can throw in all your ingredients and let the equipment do the rest of the work. Trust us; you’ll never eat the instant stuff again after this.

If you don’t have a slow cooker (also referred to as a Crock Pot), we suggest you purchase one because there is a multitude of ways outside of oatmeal that it can be used. You can find them at any department store or kitchen appliance store for about $25.

Once you’ve got your equipment set up, then the next thing you have to do is prep your oats, water, half-and-half, and dried fruits. Alton uses cranberries and figs (which are delicious), but you can literally put whatever dried fruit you want in there. Apricots, peaches, mangos, strawberries, whatever you fancy!

Put all your ingredients in the cooker, throw the lid on, and hit the on button. It’s that easy!

Disclaimer: As Alton mentions, you are leaving an electric appliance on overnight. Make sure it is in a safe and secure area, like a kitchen counter, before you proceed with this recipe.
