Big Game Snacks: The Contessa’s Guacamole Recipe

Ina Garten gives you her quick and easy guacamole recipe for the south-of-the-border classic.

If you want a SUPER snack, make a big hearty BOWL of chunky avocado goodness following this simple guacamole recipe from The Barefoot Contessa!

Any NFL fan will tell you that nothing can ruin your game watching experience like lackluster snacks. Even if your team is losing, or has been knocked out of the playoffs already, that doesn’t sting as much as inedible snacks for the big game. If you’re having people over to watch the game this weekend, make sure that your snack selection stacks up. A great start is freshly made guacamole, and Ina Garten gives you her quick and easy guacamole recipe for the south-of-the-border classic.

Rather than simply mashing everything together, The Barefoot Contessa prefers a chunky guacamole, featuring the fresh flavors of avocado and lemon juice. The beauty of making guacamole is that it is an easy-to-customize dish: you can use as many or as few avocados as you want, and everything beyond that is added to taste. If you want to add tomato, as she does, you can, or you can leave them out without affecting the final product too much.

All you really need is avocados, lemon juice (I will agree with her that fresh-squeezed is totally the way to go), salt, pepper, and a little hot sauce. Most people add a little diced onion. Some poor misguided souls add cilantro, but that seems a little foolhardy to me. Garlic adds some nice tang, and you could substitute lime juice for lemon if you want. The choice is really up to you, just keep tasting to make sure it’s tasting right.

Everybody loves some good guacamole to go with football, so make a super huge bowl of guac for your friends. Get some nice sturdy tortilla chips that cand stand up to a chunky dip, and enjoy Super Sunday.
