My Mother's Chocolate Bread Pudding

Recipe Description

She obtained this recipe when she was on a Key West Florida Navy base (my dad was career Navy) when she was a young bride. She married in 1946 so we know it goes back at least that far. Exact date unknown

Ingredients

  • 2 cups stale bread crumbs
  • 4 cups milk
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cups Granulated sugar|Sugar
  • Sauce:
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup Granulated sugar|Sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ pint heavy cream

Directions

  1. Put bread, milk, nutmeg, and cocoa in bowl.
  2. Soak 2-3 minutes.
  3. Beat eggs, Granulated sugar|Sugar, and salt.
  4. Mash soaked crumbs and add egg mixture.
  5. Pour into pudding dish.
  6. Bake in slow oven about 40 minutes placing dish in hot water.
  7. Serve with sauce which is made by beating egg white until stiff.
  8. Add milk, beaten yolk, Granulated sugar|Sugar, vanilla and cream.
  9. Stir until smooth.
