Ina Garten makes salted caramel brownies.

Are you ready for a holiday treat that is sweet and savory all in one bite?

The Barefoot Contessa teaches us some tricks to punch up the flavor of these classic chocolate brownies.

The holidays are in full swing, and if you’re anything like me you’ve already forsaken the notion of healthy eating since Halloween.

Well, Ina Garten’s Salted Caramel Brownies certainly aren’t going to help. But hey, what’s one more brownie in the scheme of the holiday eating? You’ll certainly want to make room for these brownies!

The Barefoot Contessa shows us a simple chocolate brownie recipe that doesn’t require any fancy equipment. Just a few bowls and a spoon and you’ll be set to make these wonderful delicious morsels.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour a 9×12 brownie pan and set aside. Once that’s going, get started on mixing your ingredients.

First, melt your chocolate—a combination of semisweet chip and unsweetened chocolate bars—over a bowl of simmering water. While that’s cooling, mix together the rest of your wet ingredients.

A great tip that Ina gives shares is adding a few tablespoons of instant coffee, like Nescafe, to kick up the chocolate flavor. Just make sure you’re adding instant coffee and not just pre-ground coffee!

Then sift together your dry ingredients in another bowl and incorporate that into the chocolate mixture. Finally, add some unmelted chocolate chips to this mixture. Don’t forget to toss the chocolate chips with a bit of flour to prevent them from sinking into the batter.

Once the brownies are out of the oven, it’s time to top them with a gooey caramel sauce. Ina concedes that she uses pre-made caramel sauce, but you can certainly make one if you like. Then sprinkle with sea salt. Once cool, cut into even pieces and enjoy!
