Kelsey Nixon puts a Southern twist on the classic BLT.

Fried green tomatoes add both a Southern and summertime touch to this lunchtime staple.

While there’s nothing wrong with a BLT, there is some room for improvisation.

Perhaps the most common addition to the BLT is the “A”, or avocado. But what about taking one of the ingredients already there and just kicking it up a notch?

Well that’s exactly what Kelsey Nixon does in her version of the BLT. By adding the Southern summer favorite of fried green tomatoes, she adds an extra crunch and flavor.

Aside from the fried green tomatoes, Kelsey also changes up a few other ingredients. Instead of regular bacon she uses pancetta, and instead of lettuce she uses arugula. Depending on what you like, you could keep the traditional ingredients of bacon and lettuce, or try it her way!

But the part that really ties it all together is the sweet basil mayonnaise that she makes for the sandwich’s spread. It’s simple to make, all you need is a food processor. Combine together your favorite brand of mayo, a handful of fresh basil, and lemon juice for the delicious mayo.

Serve these for lunch or a quick dinner with a side salad or potato chips!
